Our new ice climbing and winter ecology clinic is a great way to learn about the incredible sport of climbing ice while also exploring the magical landscape of Smugglers Notch. This introductory clinic is for adults of all abilities and backgrounds (ages 18+), whether it's your first time climbing or you have ice climbed before and you are looking for a new perspective. Join our naturalist guides to learn how to climb on easy to moderate terrain using crampons and ice tools.
Explore ice features such as 'ice caves', discuss how snow and ice form, what ice colors indicate, and consider the glacial geology of your view as you get to the top of a climb. What happens to the soil, plants, and animals when water freezes? What organisms are dormant or active around us? We are excited to nerd out about how the wildlife survive under and on the snow, the miniature ecosystems of mosses, and the stories trees share, as well as answer your questions.
